These facilities form a critical part of the national oil spill response infrastructure and enable rapid mobilization of equipment and vessels. Some of the vessels are on permanent standby, i.e. they have oil spill response equipment permanently on board.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, NOFO has agreements with several terminal vessels, coastal tankers and a number of coastal oil spill response vessels that largely consist of fishing vessels. Remote sensing equipment in the aircraft makes it possible to detect illegal discharges and calculate pollution levels. During operations, aerial surveillance is actively used to detect and map the extent of pollution, and thus where oil spill response efforts should be deployed.
