About NOFO

NOFO exercises

Annually, we conduct over 200 exercises and verifications.
;

This year’s major exercise is hosted by Aker BP. Equinor and Conoco Philips are part of the team.

Every year, we conduct a number of exercises where all oil spill response vessels, as well as tugboats and equipment, undergo exercises and are verified. In this way, personnel such as incident commanders, equipment operators and maritime crews also receive valuable training in NOFO equipment.

The exercises take place in collaboration with operating companies and state, municipal and private partners.

NOFO's mission

NOFO will maintain, implement and develop NOFO’s training and exercise program. We do this in close cooperation with the Hammerfest office.

  • We will plan and coordinate vessel exercises offshore and coastal, interaction exercises – including full-scale exercises and OPV. as well as verification of vessels in standing readiness.
  • We will ensure that contingency solutions are taken care of during temporary mobilizations.
  • Ensure and further develop operational concepts and operational manuals/handbooks.
  • Maintain operational contact with suppliers of emergency response resources and equipment.
  • We have professional cooperation and follow-up:
    • NBSK
    • WWF
    • Nordkapp maritime vocational school
    • The rescue company
    • Teekay

Practice and training can and will help:

Practicing with oil on water

Norway is one of the few countries that allow oil to be discharged into the sea to test equipment and procedures. Oil-on-water/OPV is part of the work to verify, maintain and further develop national oil spill preparedness.

These exercises have attracted enormous interest and have contributed to countries such as the USA, Canada, Japan, Brazil and Russia acquiring similar equipment to that used by NOFO.

But the people who will operate the equipment must also be tested. “We hold up to 60 courses a year involving more than 1,000 people. These courses cover all aspects of oil spill response. This ranges from crew on board vessels participating in oil spill response to firefighters working in IUAs (inter-municipal committees against acute pollution).

All these exercises, verifications and courses are designed to ensure that all personnel involved in oil spill response have the right skills and knowledge.

Oil spill response vessels and tugs are used in annual exercises

The exercises provide incident commanders, equipment operators and vessel crews with valuable training and experience in the handling and use of equipment. All oil spill response personnel on bases and vessels must have at least one exercise per year.

In addition to exercises with our member companies, annual joint training exercises are carried out in which the Norwegian Coastal Administration, IUA and other partners participate.
